About the Music Program

If you love to sing or play a musical instrument, St. Gregory's has many opportunities to participate in the gift of music.  St. Gregory's has 3 adult choirs which meet regularly for masses and performances (the Parish, Chant, and Spanish Choirs), a Youth Choir, and a special-occasion choir primarily for funerals (St. Joseph Choir). St. Gregory's also has Cantors for all masses and is always looking for instrumentalists to compliment the choir.

    The Parish Choir

The Parish Choir generally rehearses on Thursday evenings from 6:50 PM until 9:00 PM, and they sing for every 10:30 AM Sunday mass from September through Corpus Christi. The music is chosen from a wide variety of styles.  Other responsibilities for the Parish Choir include singing for the Thanksgiving Day mass, the Festival of Lights, Lessons, and Carols, and Midnight Mass, and attending a biannual (hopefully soon to be annual! ) retreat at the St. Vincent Pallotti Retreat Center in Elkhorn, WI.

As a special activity in the 2006-2007 Season, the Parish Choir went on a pilgrimage to Italy in March to sing at several locations, including St. Peter's Basilica. Please see the Italy 2007 section for more details on this once-in-a-lifetime trip.

    The Chamber Choir

As Patrick went on tour with the CSO for Easter week 2005, he formed a Chamber Choir of about 12 to 15 voices that sang for the Triduum masses; upon returning he decided to keep the group functioning.  A chamber choir is a smaller ensemble, usually 3 to 4 on a part (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass).  His number 1 goal as music director is to provide great music for the congregation to glimpse the greater glory of God.  He takes that responsibility very seriously as director of this music program - one of his main responsibilities is the quality and diversity of our music at St. Gregory.  His goals for the Chamber Choir are to sing for the devotional evenings and other special liturgies during the year to provide added music that the congregation wouldn't normally hear at the weekend masses and to sing very challenging repertoire that the Parish Choir may not get a chance to sing due to time constraints.  Membership in this group is only through appointment by Patrick.

    The Youth Choir

The St. Gregory Youth Choir is beginning its first season under the direction of Jennifer Sherrill. The Youth Choir is a talented group of young people who would agree that singing is FUN and singing with a group of friends in an ensemble is even more rewarding because of the educational, social, and faith-filled benefits:

    • Increasing reading skills and vocabulary
    • Increasing musical skills and musical appreciation
    • Increasing their understanding of the Catholic faith and the liturgy
    • Strengthening social skills and values
    • Developing confidence and poise

Our young singers range in ages 8 years to high school attending many different local elementary and high schools. The Youth Choir has built new bonds and has kept old friendships intact. This wonderful group of young people is committed to each other and to their parish.

The Youth Choir rehearses on Sundays during the school year at the Parish Center after the 10:30 AM mass - from 11:45 AM to 1:00 PM. The Youth Choir sings approximately six times per year at various masses. A highlight for the Youth Choir is singing at the parish's Festival of Lights, Lessons, and Carols.

For more information, please contact the St. Gregory Parish Center at 773-561-3546, leaving a message for Patrick Godon, Parish Music Director, or Jen Sherill, Youth Choir Director.

    The St. Joseph Choir

The St. Joseph's Choir sings for funerals, acting as ambassador to the St. Gregory Parish Community. They rehearse periodically and offer comfort with their many voices to those who have lost a loved one. Members are generally retired and happy to help those in need.

    Instrumentalists

Instrumentalists are welcome.  If you play an instrument and are interested in playing for mass in some capacity, please contact Patrick Godon at the Parish Center at 773-561-3546 or at pgodon@stgregory.net to discuss opportunities.

    Cantors

We currently have six (6) cantors that we alternate between the three weekend masses. Cantors lead the assembly in song and encourage all to sing. Anyone interested should please contact Patrick Godon at 773-561-3546 or at pgodon@stgregory.net for more details.
